Both IUP basketball teams are 3-0 after yesterday’s action at the KCAC.
The women took the court first for the annual Education Day game and won on a record-setting day, 102-20. The game set a new women’s basketball attendance record with 2,992 fans as IUP tied its second largest margin of victory. Every IUP player scored, led by Anna Rafferty and freshman Hope Cook, the Indiana High grad, each with 15 points. Grace Spadaro and Daniela Shaughnessy each had 13.
The women had a game scheduled tomorrow night at the University of the District of Columbia, but it’s been canceled. They will play next Wednesday at 5:30 against Ohio Dominican.
The IUP men took the court last night in front of another large crowd to play Bowie State and to collect some hardware. Jack Benedict has the game story.
Attendance was 2,392 for the men’s game as university president Michael Driscoll accepted the NCAA Final Four trophy from Coach Joe Lombardi in a pregame ceremony and the team raised another banner.
Lombardi said he was grateful for the opportunity to celebrate a special season.
Lombardi said the IUP offense will take a while to develop this season as Ethan Porterfield and Shawndale Jones continue to build strength after reganing their health and as Dave Morris adjusts to running the point.
Lombardi said IUP will get it done with defense and rebounding this season, especially when 6-foot-6-inch strongman Tomiwa Sulaiman is playing the back line.
Fans will get a chance to watch a football/basketball doubleheader on November 26th with both Crimson Hawks teams playing at home. The football team hosts the first round of the NCAA D-2 Super Region One playoffs with a game against the winner of this Saturday’s game between Ashland and Notre Dame (Ohio). The time for that game has yet to be announced but it will be early afternoon. IUP has switched the tipoff time for the men’s basketball game against New Haven to 4:30, so fans can make the short walk from Miller Stadium to the KCAC and catch that game, too.
