The Penguins beat the Black Hawks last night, 3-2 in a shootout, but they lost Sidney Crosby to a lower body injury in the third period.
Pittsburgh fell behind, 2-0 in the second period on Chicago goals by Dominik Kubalik and Patrick Kane, but at 16:04 of the second, Evgeni Malkin fed Jake Guentzel across the crease and Guentzel knocked it into the net. Then at 10:57 of the third period, defenseman John Marino steered a gorgeous cross-ice pass to Bryan Rust for a wrist shot to tie the game at 2.
After a scoreless overtime, Kane scored for Chicago in the shootout, but Guentzel and Jared McCann scored for the Penguins to put away the win.
Crosby skidded awkwardly into the boards early in the final period of regulation and moment later took a slap shot off his foot. He left the ice and did not return. The team says only that he is being evaluated. A week ago, the Pens skated for the first time all season with a full cast of players. Since that time, they have lost stars Crosby, Kris Letang, and Patric Hornqvist to injuries.
The Penguins are off until Tuesday, when they visit the New York Rangers.
