The Pirates yesterday traded for a new first baseman, Tampa Bay’s Ji-Man Choi. He hit .233 with 22 doubles, 11 home runs, and 52 RBIs last year. The Rays get minor league pitcher Jack Hartman, a 2020 fourth-round draft choice who was 0-1 with a 6.27 ERA in 22 appearances this past season.
The Pirates also reinstated pitchers Yerry De Los Santos, Max Kranick, Colin Holderman, and Blake Cederlind from the 60-day injured list, along with outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba. They optioned six players to Indianapolis, including catcher Jason Delay.
The Pirates yesterday named catcher/infielder Endy Rodriguez their Honus Wagner Player of the Year in the minor league system and Quinn Priester was named the Bob Friend Pitcher of the Year.
The Silver Slugger awards were announced yesterday by MLB. The Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds was a finalist but did not win. The Angels’ Mike Trout won his ninth Silver Slugger. Reynolds was nominated yesterday for the 2022 All-MLB team. Fans can vote for the team at mlb.com.
The Dodgers have agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who will return for a 16th season. The Astros’ Justin Verlander, who is the favorite for the AL Cy Young Award, has elected to become a free agent.
