Last night, Indiana borough council met and approved a resolution approving the project scope and three-year plan for their 2019 Community Development and Block Grant Funds.
Gerald Smith, the chairman of the public works committee, said the CDBG grants would go towards storm water mitigation projects.
In other business, council members received a detailed report on the calls handled by Indiana Borough Police during IUP’s Homecoming Weekend earlier this month. Chief Justin Schawl said that police during 2019 Homecoming weekend, they handled 218 calls for service. While it looked like the number of service calls increased this year over the last two years, the police added 37 school safety patrols and four house of worship patrols during the weekend that were not documented in the last two years. Taking those patrols out of the tally, calls for service totaled at 177.
He said that he was very proud of the borough’s response to ensuring peace, safety and comfort over the high celebratory weekend.
Finally, council approved accepting the 2018 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for $16,895 which will go towards the down payment for a new police vehicle.
