After practicing last Wednesday, newly acquired Steelers cornerback William Jackson III was not on the field yesterday as the team worked out for the first time after their bye week, and he said afterward that his bothersome back injury was the reason. The sore back caused Jackson to miss his last three games with Washington before being traded to the Steelers last week.
One new addition to the Steelers secondary was on the field yesterday. Safety Damontae Kazee was practicing before the break as he works on returing from a broken wrist suffered in the last preseason game, followed by a two-game NFL suspension for violating league rules on substances of abuse.
Kazee’s presence and the return of linebacker TJ Watt were positive signs for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who says the Steelers can finally put their complete team on the field on defense.
Kazee is excited to finally play for the Steelers, and says they can turn their poor season around by playing as a team.
Technically, Kazee is not officially back. The Steelers have to activate him from injured reserve by Thursday or they lose him for the season. Watt has another week before the team must activate him, but he is eligible to return now.
The Steelers play the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. The Saints were beaten by the Baltimore Ravens, 27-13, in Monday Night Football last night. The Ravens lead the AFC North at 6-and-3. The Saints fell to 3-and-6.
