The Diocese of Greensburg has announced how much they have paid out from their Survivors’ Compensation Fund.
$4,350,020 was distributed to 57 people who suffered child sexual abuse from members of the clergy. The survivors’ compensation program was set up by the diocese earlier this year to help survivors as part of the diocese’s Comprehensive Reconciliation Initiative. The funds were administered by Commonwealth Mediation and Conciliation, Inc., a private resolution company. All claims have been paid in full.
The Comprehensive Reconciliation Initiative was established in February by Bishop Edward Malesic to help survivors in the healing process not just financially but spiritually as well. He called it a commitment to support those that the diocese failed to protect. No assets from schools or parishes, including the sale of parish or school property, were used to fund the settlements. As part of the Survivors’ Compensation Fund, the diocese spent $200,000 in legal fees and another $170,000 to administer the fund.
