The State Education Department yesterday announced $7.2 million in grants for school safety, with some of that money coming to Indiana County.
There are four types of competitive grants: equipment grants of as much as $25,000; program grants of up to $20,000; School Police Officer grants of as much as $40,000; and School Resource Officer grants of up to $60,000.
In Indiana County, Penns Manor School District will receive an equipment grant of $24,986, and United will get three grants: an equipment grant of $25,000, a program grant of $9,250, and a School Police Officer grant for $40,000.
School police officers are employees of the district, while school resource officers are employees of the police agency within the jurisdiction of the school district who work under an agreement between the district and the agency.
The grant announcement yesterday included more than $4 million to public schools and $3.2 million for private and charter schools.
