The Pittsburgh Penguins were defeated by the Buffalo Sabres, 5-4, in overtime last night, as the NHL preseason began.
The Penguins tried to come back from a 4-1 deficit in the second period. They tied the score at 8:46 of the third when forward prospect Ryan Haggerty deflected a shot past goaltender Jonas Johansson.
Sabres forward Jack Eichel scored on a breakway to earn the win with just eight seconds left in overtime.
Buffalo played many of its top players and by far outshot the Penguins, 47-18. The Penguins’ lineup had only a handful of NHL regulars.
The Pens will be at home Thursday night when they host the Blue Jackets.
