The Steelers dropped their interception opportunities and the Dolphins caught theirs, and the end result is another disappointing loss on a Sunday night in Miami.
Three Dolphins’ picks helped them control Kenny Pickett and the Steelers offense in a 16-10 win for Miami. Two of those interceptions happened down the stretch in the fourth quarter, including one potential game-winner for the Steelers in the Dolphins’ end zone with 18 seconds left in the game.
All of the points in the game came in the first half. Miami took a 13-0 lead with scores on their first three possessions. Chris Boswell kicked a 45-yard field goal early in the second quarter and Pickett hit George Pickens for a 7-yard touchdown pass on the next Steelers’ possession with under two minutes to play in the half. But the Dolphins kicked a 47-yard field goal with seven seconds left to make it 16-10 at the half.
Pickett finished 32-of-44 passing with the touchdown pass to Pickens and three interceptions, one in the first quarter and two on the final two possessions of the game. The final two picks were at the Dolphins’ 18-yard line and in the end zone.
While the Dolphins were able to grab three interceptions, the Steelers had four drop through their hands. Levi Wallace dropped two, Cam Sutton one, and Terrell Edmunds lost one. Coach Mike Tomlin says the defensive “splash plays” went Miami’s way.
Tomlin says his defense let the Steelers down, so it’s back to the drawing board for a game next Sunday afternoon at undefeated Philadelphia.
One of Pickett’s interceptions, at the Dolphins’ 18-yard line in the fourth quarter, came when Diontae Johnson went long and Pickett threw short.
Pickett says he is still learning the NFL game while slowly seeing progress.
Injured linebacker TJ Watt worked out for about 40 minutes before the game. He’s been out since injuring his left pectoral muscle in the season opener in Cincinnati and suffering a knee injury that required surgery a couple of weeks ago. Watt is eligible to come off injured reserve now but is not ready yet.
The Steelers play at unbeaten Philadelphia on Sunday and then get their bye week. Watt could be aiming to return for the November 13th game against New Orleans.
