State representative Jim Struzzi will host a testimonial hearing for the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committee to discuss a bill that would create a tuition assistance program for active volunteers.
The hearing will be held at the Indiana Fire Association Substation on Indian Springs Road on Thursday, September 5th starting at 10 AM. Through the program, an active member of a volunteer fire company or EMS agency that is attending an approved higher learning institute would be eligible to receive tuition assistance. Testimony will include presentations from local firefighters on tuition and education incentives.
In a news release, Struzzi said the volunteers deserve to be rewarded for the hard word and sacrifices they make to help the community out.
Struzzi’s bill is based on the Pennsylvania National Guard Education Assistance Program. The hearing will also discuss another house bill that will forgive up to $16,000 in students loans for graduates who serve as a volunteer first responder for at least four years.
The event is open to the public.
