Those who like the vibrant colors of fall have already noticed that tree leaves have already started to turn in Indiana County, and the state department of Conservation and Natural Resources says that this is the best time for leaf colors in the county.
After going the last two weeks in the “starting to change” category, Indiana County joins about 75% of the state as now being in the “best color”, according to the weekly report from DCNR. According to the Gallitzin State Forest manager, who serves Indiana along with Blair and Cambria Counties, the cooler temperatures last week really accelerated color changes in area forests. They add that maple trees are also at peak display and oaks are also contributing to the color spread as well.
The southeast corner of the state remains in the “starting to change” category, while 17 counties from the east to the south-central part of the state and four counties along the western border are “approaching best color”. McKean, Potter, Susquehanna and Wayne counties to the north and north-east are now past their prime color.
