State police are asking the community for donations of horses to help out the state police’s mounted patrol unit.
State police maintains stables at the academy in Hershey, and they rely on donations to keep a full complement of 28 horses at those stables. They are looking for geldings between 5 and 15 years old and stand between 16 and 18 hands tall. Draft and draft crosses are preferred, while thoroughbreds and other “hot bloods” are less desirable for the job. Police are also saying that the animals must have quiet, sound dispositions and be free of serious stable vices.
When the horses are retired, they are first offered back to their original owners, but if they are unwilling or unable to accept horses, a good home will be found for the animals.
To arrange a donation, call Corporal Carrie Neidigh at 717-783-3463.
