With contract talks set to get underway next month, APSCUF, the faculty union at the State System of Higher Education, yesterday issued a brief statement in reaction to the retirement announcement of Chancellor Frank Brogan.
Union chief Kenneth Mash said “Leadership changes often provide opportunities for constructive changes.” Citing the report last week by the consulting firm conducting the System’s Strategic Review, Mash said APSCUF is anxious to work with the System to better fulfill its mission of a high quality education at an affordable price.
APSCUF’s relationship with Brogan has not always been smooth. During his tenure, the union staged its first-ever strike, and contract talks have frequently broken down, with APSCUF once reacting after another failed nighttime session, “Could Chancellor Frank Brogan not stay up past his bedtime to defend quality public higher education?”
Brogan’s retirement is effective in September. The State System will name –quote- “interim leadership” to replace him, but it does not use the term “interim chancellor”, which could indicate more than one person could be hired to perform the duties.
