The Indiana School Board met last night and voted NOT to change the district calendar for the next year.
The district had decided at their March 27th meeting to move the start of school back to August 22nd in order to facilitate construction schedules for the proposed Ben Franklin project. Now that the project is off the table, Superintendent Dale Kirsch reluctantly asked to move the start of school to August 28th, a full week later than original. Board President Doug Steve said that moving the school year’s start date would be an inconvenience to many district parents, whether it be scheduling around school for events like weddings and trips to paying for additional daycare for younger students. The board unanimously rejected changing the district calendar and the accompanying motion concerning revised Act 80 days.
In other business, board president Doug Steve was accused during the meeting of making an improper visit to Horace Mann elementary school to take a look at the building itself. The accusation was that Steve went into the building and did not follow PSBA guidelines concerning school board members making a visit. Steve said the visit was made under the proper guidelines, and he went through the school’s office, and was granted permission to take pictures of some repairs being done to the building. Steve said his visit concerned the repair of ceiling tiles, and was happy with what the repairs made.
