The Pirates bullpen failed to protect a four-run lead and it led to the Bucs’ 100th loss of the season.
Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates will finish the season this afternoon at PNC Park and should they lose the game, they will finish the season with the identical 61-101 mark they had last year. This is the first time they have had back-to-back 100-loss seasons since losing over a hundred for three consecutive seasons between 1952 and 1954. Johan Oviedo [4-3, 3.12 ERA] starts for the Bucs. The Cardinals have not named their starter. The airtime is 3:40 on WCCS.
Third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes revealed yesterday that he has played with pain in his hip that lead to more pain in his back – in his words – “the whole year”. Hayes has hit only .245 this season with 24 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, and just 41 RBIs. He says he intends to “get that fixed” in the offseason, but he didn’t say what needs to be done.
MLB
The Yankees’ Aaron Judge finally became the all-time American League single-season home run leader last night, hitting number 62 in the nightcap of a doubleheader against the Texas Rangers. The homer breaks Judge’s tie with former Yankees great Roger Maris, who hit 61 in 1961.
The MLB Playoff matchups are now set. The Mariners locked up the second AL Wild Card with a win on Tuesday, sending the Rays to the third AL Wild Card. Seattle will open up the playoffs in Toronto on Friday. The Rays will face Cleveland in the other AL Wild Card series. In the National League, the Padres secured the second NL Wild Card and will begin the postseason in New York against the Mets. The Phillies settled for the third NL Wild Card and will meet the St. Louis Cardinals. All four of the best-of-three Wild Card series will take place Friday through Sunday. The Yankees, Astros, Braves, and Dodgers have first-round byes.
