The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has issued its first fall foliage report for the 2022 season, and most of Pennsylvania is either in a “no change” or “about to change” category.
The only areas that have started to see widespread leaf color change has been McKean, Potter, Susquehanna and Wayne counties in the North and Northeast parts of the state. Indiana County, like 75% of the state, is in the category “starting to change”, while the rest is in the “no change” category.
Reports from the commission say that Gallitzin State Forest staff had reported no significant fall foliage observations in the district.
The report from the department said that some recent rainfall has actually stopped a premature leaf drop in the state. Drier forests over the summer months have also meant that fewer leaf fungi were seen in the state, and that should set the stage for a season of vivid colors.
