Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is well aware of his team’s struggles on both sides of the football, but he sounded optimistic that they are getting better every week.
The problem, the coach says, is that “improvement” has not translated to wins. He’s going to have to find answers amid an increasingly large injury list.
All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is in concussion protocol; cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon is “limited” with a hamstring injury; guard Kevin Dotson has a bum ankle; and punter Pressley Harvin III turned up after last Thursday’s game with a hip injury. The team signed their former punter, Jordan Berry, to the practice squad as a safeguard against Harvin being unavailable.
Tomlin says his focus now is on this week’s opponent, the New York Jets, even as he deals with the uncertainty over the status of his injured players.
Tomlin says he sees a team that is getting better, despite two straight losses.
To make room on the practice squad roster for Berry, the Steelers released linebacker Delontae Scott, who was active the last two weeks as a replacement for TJ Watt but returned to the practice squad after each game.
The Steelers’ depth chart this week has Montravius Adams listed over Tyson Alualu on the defensive line. Tomlin said Adams has simply played better than Alualu so far this season.

Browns defensive end Myles Garrett was released from the hospital yesterday after being involved in a rollover crash the day before. The crash apparently occurred when Garrett swerved to avoid an animal on the road.
