Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says his team left some opportunities on the field Sunday in their loss to New England, but he vowed to “exercise patience” with his team, and particularly with his woeful offense. At his weekly news conference, held a day early because the Steelers play the Browns on Thursday night, Tomlin said the offense led by quarterback Mitch Trubisky has to improve, but he’s confident it will.
Tomlin did not sound ready to panic.
The Steelers defense was not good enough in the New England game either, failing to take away the ball from the Patriots and allowing them to keep the ball for the final 6:32 of the game. Tomlin said it was easy to see why the Pats were so dominant.
While the coach did not say that Gunnar Olszewski’s job is on the line after his muffed punt led to New England’s game-winning score in Sunday, he did say there are “consequences” when he expects eleven professionals on the field and there aren’t. On the crucial third quarter punt, Olszewski not only failed to field the ball, he failed to count the number of teammates he had on the field, which is the returner’s job. There were only ten men on the field for the Steelers on that play.
Steelers/Browns happens Thursday night in Cleveland. You’ll hear it on FM 100.3 and AM 1450, WDAD, starting with the pregame at 6:15, kickoff at 8:15.
