Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate is at the lowest level in over 20 years, according to the Department of Labor and Industry.
After going down a tenth of a percentage point over the month of August, Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate is now at 4.2 percent, which is the lowest rate since June of 2000. The state’s civilian labor force, which is the number of residents working or looking for work, went up by 2000 over the month. The employment count rose 4,000 to 6,175,000 people while unemployment went down by 2000 to 273,000. The total number of non-farm jobs in the state went up 6700 over the month to 5,984,400.
In August, jobs increased in seven of eleven industry super-sectors, with the two largest gains being in trade, transportation and business along with professional and business services. Both super-sectors rose to record high levels. From April of 2020 to August of 2022, Pennsylvania has recovered about 90% of the jobs lost due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The national unemployment rate is 3.7 percent.
Local unemployment statistics are expected to be released later this month.
