On a night when Pirates’ legend Roberto Clemente was honored across Major League Baseball, the Great One’s former team put on an un-Clemente-like performance in New York.
Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates and Mets go at it again tonight at CitiBank Field. Mitch Keller, at 5-10 with a 4.01 ERA, goes against the Mets’ Taijuan Walker, who is 11-4 with a 3.48 ERA. Keller threw six shout innings against the Mets two starts ago and followed it up with 7 shutout innings against the Reds in his last start. In his last 19 innings, he had given up just two runs.
The Pirates called up left-hander Eric Stout for some bullpen help before yesterday’s game and designated for assignment right-hander Tyler Beede and left-hander Dillon Peters, who has been on a rehab assignment with Altoona. There are two spots open on the 40-man roster heading into tonight.
MLB
On Roberto Clemente Night, Tampa Bay became the first team in history to start nine players from Latin American countries in an MLB game. The Rays beat Toronto, 11-0.
ALTOONA CURVE
A night after shutting out Reading, 8-0, the Curve was on the other end of a shutout, falling 9-0 last night and suffering elimination from Eastern League playoff contention. The Fightin’ Phils got to Altoona starter Quinn Priester for two runs in the second inning and five more in the fourth. Carmen Mlodzinski starts for the Curve tonight.
