The Pirates gave fans a glimpse of the future yesterday with two young fireballing pitchers shutting down the Cincinnati Reds in a day/night doubleheader.
Here’s Joe Block.
The Bucs get a chance for the four-game sweep this afternoon in Cincinnati. Roansy Contreras [5-4, 3.29 ERA] faces Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo [4-5, 3.78 ERA]. It’s a 12:10 airtime on WCCS.
The Pirates made several roster moves prior to and then between games of the doubleheader. Utility man Tucupita Marcano was optioned to Indianapolis to make room on the big league roster for new acquisition Zack Collins, who played first base in the second game and was 0-for-3. To make room for Collins on the 40-man roster, they designated for assignment first baseman/outfielder Bligh Madris, hoping he would not be claimed by another team.
All-Star closer David Bednar began his rehab assignment with Indianapolis yesterday, throwing one inning and giving up one run on one hit with two strikeouts.
ALTOONA
Altoona broke open a 4-4 game in the 7th inning and went on to a 9-4 win over Reading. Endy Rodriguez had two RBI doubles and Connor Scott had an RBI double in the 4th and a two-run single in the 7th. Henry Davis had a two-run home run for the Curve.
In the Eastern league playoff chase, Akron beat Bowie and Erie knocked off Richmond. With five games left to play, the Curve are three-and-a-half games out of the final playoff spot, behind Erie, which holds a one-game lead over Bowie and two game lead over Akron.
Kyle Nicolas starts for the Curve tonight in the second game of the series.
