For the second straight game, the Pirates got a great pitching performance from their starter, but blew a lead in the 9th inning and lost to the Cardinals.

While the Pirates bullpen has stumbled in recent weeks, they are still going to have to wait for All-Star closer David Bednar to return. Bednar last pitched July 29th before going on the injured list with a bad back. He pitched a bullpen session on Saturday and manager Derek Shelton said Bednar will head out for a minor league rehab stint soon.
Right-hander Luis Ortiz spent most of the season with Altoona and has pitched only two games since his promotion to Indianapolis, but last Thursday he threw six no-hit innings, striking out nine, and according the Post-Gazette’s Jason Mackey, the Pirates are going to give Ortiz a look at the big league level. Mackey says the Bucs will call Ortiz up from Indy.
The Pirates open a four-game series in Cincinnati tonight. Bryse Wilson pitches for the Bucs against the Reds’ Mike Minor. It will be a 6:15 airtime on WCCS, 6:40 first pitch from the Great American Ballpark.
ALTOONA
Brad Case gave up two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning and Altoona lost to Erie, 6-5. Liover Peguero hit a home run for the Curve, which will return home to open their final homestand of the season tomorrow night against the Reading Phillies.
