The Pirates were swamped by the Mets yesterday in a doubleheader at PNC Park.
Greg Brown has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates’ youngsters need to learn their lessons while taking their lumps against good teams like the Mets.
Shelton says the Pirates dug themselves big holes against solid Mets pitching.
The Pirates made several roster moves yesterday, including designating for assignment infielder Josh VanMeter, who hit only .187 with three home runs and 14 RBIs after being acquired at the start of the season. Infielder/outfielder Hoy Park was recalled from Indianapolis.
The Bucs claimed first baseman/catcher Zack Collins off waivers from the Blue Jays and pitcher Junior Fernandez off waivers from the Cardinals. Collins was the tenth overall selection by Miami in the 2016 draft who has hit under .200 since his debut in the majors with the White Sox. He was traded to Toronto for former Pirates number one pick Reese McGuire in April and hit only .194 this year. Fernandez has a 2.93 ERA in 13 appearances for St. Louis this year, and a 5.51 ERA in parts of four seasons with the Cards.
Along with VanMeter, pitcher Cam Vieaux was designated for assignment by the Pirates in order to add Collins and Fernandez to the 40-man roster. The two new Pirates were both optioned to Indy.
The Pirates are off today and open a three-game home series tomorrow night against the Cardinals.
ALTOONA
The Altoona Curve trimmed Erie, 2-1 in ten innings last night as left-fielder Fabricio Macias hit an RBI double to drive in the game-winner. Macias was 2-for-4 on the night. Tahnaj Thomas went one-and-a-third innings and struck out one, walking one as well, and earned the win. Colin Selby got his 8th save after picking off a runner at first, having another runner cut down at the plate by first baseman Aaron Shackelford, and striking out the final batter.
