The State Department of Revenue is announcing that seniors are being targeted in a scam that concerns the property tax/rent rebate program.
Seniors that use the program are the ones being targeted by callers. The caller starts off saying that they work for the Department of Revenue and that the victim’s application for the property tax/rent rebate program has been approved. They continue by asking if the recipient would like the money directly deposited in their bank account, and that is followed by a request for the victim’s banking information.
The Department of Revenue wants to remind everyone that while the property tax/rent rebate program is a real thing, the department would not make any unsolicited phone calls to ask for bank information. Applicants are required to submit their banking information on their application forms. If more information is required, then a request will come through the mail.
If you feel you received this call and if you gave out sensitive information, be sure to call police and call your bank to report the fraud.
