The Steelers made two trades and a bunch of cuts yesterday to get down to the 53-man limit, and Mike Tomlin said they were looking at “external” options to put the finishing touches on the opening day roster.
Outside linebacker Malik Reed was acquired from Denver along with a 7th round draft pick next year in exchange for the Steelers’ 6th round pick in 2023. They also got offensive lineman Jesse Davis from Minnesota, who played five seasons with Miami before signing with Minnesota in June. The Vikings get a conditional 7th round draft pick from the Steelers for Davis.
Coach Mike Tomlin is looking forward to getting Malik Reed to Pittsburgh.
24 players were cut yesterday, including several who have played in regular season games for the Steelers. The most surprising cuts were offensive lineman John Leglue, defensive lineman Henry Mondeaux, running back Anthony McFarland, and cornerback Justin Layne. Also landing on the cut list were safety/linebacker Marcus Allen, offensive lineman Joe Haeg, and defensive lineman Carlos Davis, along with linebacker Buddy Johnson. A number of players could be placed on injured reserve and some of the cut will re-sign to the practice squad.
Tomlin says the Steelers put in a day of video review and practice yesterday, and he’s looking for quality work as the team looks forward to the September 11th opener in Cincinnati.
Linebacker Alex Highsmith and defensive lineman Montravius Adams returned to practice yesterday and both said they will be ready to go in Week One. The Steelers will practice again today and then take a four-day weekend off.
