An inmate at SCI Pine Grove has been charged with aggravated assault for an attack on a corrections officer at the state prison in White Township.
28-year-old Tamir Hammett of Brookhaven, Delaware County, is accused of assaulting Corrections Officer Kevin Smith of Indiana while Smith was on the phone on May 27th. Smith suffered unspecified injuries in the attack.
Hammett is serving seven-and-a-half to fifteen years for his conviction on a host of charges from an April 2015 incident. He was found guilty of assault, stalking, robbery, and six other offenses. A charge of aggravated arson was withdrawn. His conviction and sentencing are currently under appeal.
The new charges include aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct engaging in fighting, and harassment. Hammett is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 20th before District Judge George Thachik.
