The Pirates and Brewers exchanged the lead numerous times yesterday before Milwaukee prevailed, 12-10 in thirteen innings.
The Bucs seemed poised for the win after Starling Marte’s three-run 8th inning home run gave them a 10-8 lead, but closer Felipe Vazquez gave up a two-run homer for his first blown save of the year. Marte had four hits in the loss.
Pirates starter Nick Kingham was torched again, giving up five runs in the first two innings. The Pirates stormed back to take a 7-5 lead on pinch hitter Jose Osuna’s two-run home run in the 5th. But Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich gave the Brewers an 8-7 lead when, one pitch after Pittsburgh shortstop Kevin Newman let an easy foul popup fall harmlessly to the ground, he launched a three-run blast. Marte’s dramatic home run in the 8th gave the Pirates the lead again, but Vazquez failed to hold it. Alex McCrae gave up the two 13-inning runs to take the loss.
Here’s a recap by Greg Brown.
Jordan Lyles will take the mound as the Pirates try to earn a split in the four-game series this afternoon.
