The Indiana County District Attorney’s Office has issued a statement about the charges filed against an Indiana County Teen for assaulting a police officer at the courthouse.
State police reported that on Tuesday, May 28th, around 9:00 in the morning, a 17-year-old was waiting outside the courtroom of a district judge when he punched a state policeman. State police say the attack was unprovoked. The teen was quickly taken into custody at that point.
District Attorney Pat Dougherty said in a news release that there were nine factors that had to be considered in making the decision on whether to charge him as a juvenile. They included:
- Age
- Mental capacity
- Maturity
- Degree of criminal sophistication exhibited by the child
- Any prior records
- The nature and extent of any prior delinquent history, including previous attempts by the juvenile court to rehabilitate the child
- Whether the child can be rehabilitated before they turn 18.
- Any probation or institutional reports
- Any other relevant reasons or factors.
When the DA’s office, the Juvenile Probation department and the state police discussed it, they determined that the matter should remain in Juvenile court.
