After several days of examining a sinkhole on Route 403 – the Cramer Pike – in East Wheatfield Township, PennDOT has finalized plans to fix and reopen the busy highway.
Work will begin today (7 AM), with a targeted time for completion of repairs by tomorrow evening, barring unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather.
The highway is closed between the Route 711 (Charles Road) intersection and the Route 22 East ramp. Cramer Pike is one of two major routes from Indiana County to Johnstown. The easiest detour is to take Route 56 from Armagh, continuing through Seward and on to Johnstown on Haws Pike.
PennDOT has not said what caused the sinkhole or how extensive the damage is underneath the road surface. After the sinkhole opened sometime Sunday night, the agency had originally estimated reopening Route 403 at noon Monday. It then said the road would reopen yesterday afternoon.
