On Thursday night, the Homer-Center School Board approved several contracts, but it also spurred up some discussion on how fair these contracts are.
The contracts are for several different sports coaches, advisors for yearbook and other supplemental positions. The vote went 8-1 with Michael Schmidt the lone dissenting vote. He made it clear that it was not because he thought the people to be hired were not qualified, but because there was disparity between positions that are paid for against similar positions that are not paid.
Board member James McLoughlin agreed with Schmidt’s notion on equity but said that the employees’ salaries should not be held up over it.
McLoughlin expects the issue to be brought up again in the future.
In other business, the board officially accepted the resignation of superintendent Curtis Whitesel. He will stay on and help with the selection of the next superintendent.
