State police are reminding everyone that school buses will be back out on the road soon and that means that people will need to allow for extra time and take some extra caution with them during their commutes.
Troopers say that it is state law to stop at least ten feet away from a school bus when the bus is completely stopped, the red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is extended, whether they are approaching from the rear or the front of the school bus. If the road is divided by a grassy median, guide rails or concrete median barriers, oncoming traffic may continue through as normal. Also, the driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection where a school bus is dropping off kids is supposed to stop until the flashing red lights are no longer activated. If these rules are violated, the driver could face a $250 fine, five points on their driving record and a 60-day license suspension.
Parents and caregivers are also reminded to go over school bus safety tips with their children, including waiting away from the curb for the bus, never running after the bus if it has already left the stop, and walking at least ten feet in front of the bus when crossing in front of it.
