The Indiana Area High School community and the Indiana community as a whole is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Mason Robert McCauley of Shelocta, who died Saturday evening when his Ford Escape veered off McIntyre Road in Young Township, crashing into a fire hydrant and a tree. Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head and neck. McCauley was not wearing a seatbelt.
McCauley was scheduled to graduate on June 5th. He was a member of the school’s lacrosse team, an outdoorsman, and motocross enthusiast.
Coroner Overman noted that McCauley was an organ donor.
Emergency responders from the Coal Run/McIntyre and Iselin/West Lebanon fire companies and Lifestat Ambulance of Saltsburg were summoned shortly before 6:30 PM. The coroner’s office was summoned shortly afterward. The road remained closed for several hours after the accident.
