The Pirates smacked three home runs but went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position during last night’s 5-3 loss against the San Francisco Giants.
Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton said his team held All-Star Carlos Rodon in check throughout the game.
Infielder Rodolfo Castro hit one of the three solo home runs for Pittsburgh last night. Since being called up on Wednesday, he’s 4-for-12 with a home run, two triples and just two strikeouts. Shelton said this has been an encouraging string of games for him.
Both teams return to action tonight. RHP Tyler Beede (1-1, 3.57 ERA) will start for the Pirates. RHP Tyler Webb (10-5, 3.17 ERA) goes for the Giants. Airtime is 8:40 on WCCS 101.1 FM and AM 1160.
The Pirates yesterday placed rookie RHP Yerry De Los Santos on the 60-day injured list with a strained latissimus dorsi muscle in his right shoulder, ultimately ending his season. In a corresponding move, the team selected the contract of RHP Austin Brice from the taxi squad.

Things continue to get worse for San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., as it was announced yesterday that he was suspended 80 games for violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention Program after he tested positive for Clostebol, a performance-enhancing drug. Tatis was rehabbing from a broken left wrist, which he suffered earlier this year.
Tatis apologized to his team and Padres fans in a statement, saying it was his “mistake” that led to a positive test. His suspension started yesterday, and he will miss the remaining 48 games of the season and some time in 2023.
