The Steelers put on a show for the fans yesterday during a practice held at Latrobe’s Memorial Stadium, wrapping up the session with a hard-hitting goal line drill.
Coach Mike Tomlin was happy to focus on preparations for this Saturday’s preseason opener against Seattle.
Tomlin said the team needed the work on the goal line.
The team is getting healthier on the defensive line. Tyson Alualu was activated off the physically unable to perform list after being out since the start of training camp with a sore knee and was a limited participant. Newly-signed lineman Larry Ogunjobi practiced for the first time as he returns from January ankle surgery.
Other injured players suiting up yesterday were safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and wide receiver Chase Claypool, who increased their workloads, and tight end Pat Freiermuth, who was limited.
New injuries noted by Tomlin were linebacker Alex Highsmith’s sore ribs, linebacker Genard Avery’s groin, a cranky hip flexor for wide receiver Diontae Johnson, and an ankle injury for guard Kevin Dotson. Fullback Derek Watt and linebacker Ulysses Gilbert III were both missing from the practice field, Watt with a shoulder injury and Gilbert with an ankle.
The Steelers signed former James Madison outside linebacker Ron’Dell Carter on Monday. He’s spent time in the NFL with the Cowboys and Texans.
