U.S. News & World Report has issued its annual rankings of high schools across the nation, including where they rank within their state. The rankings are compiled using each school’s measure of the college readiness of its students and their proficiency at both mathematics and English.
No Indiana County high schools make the top 100 out of Pennsylvania’s 673. The highest-ranked school is Indiana Senior High, which comes in at number 143. Next highest is Marion Center is next at number 205, followed by Saltsburg at 301, Blairsville at 326, United at 334, and Homer Center at 359. The magazine lumps together the remaining high schools, not assigning an individual number for schools 516 to 673. Penns Manor and Purchase Line fall into that category.
Taking a look at schools in neighboring counties, Ligonier Valley is at number 129, the highest ranking in the region. West Shamokin is number 212, Punxsutawney number 235, Apollo Ridge 410, and Derry Area 453.
Top placements in the rankings among Indiana County include Indiana’s college readiness index, a measure of students who took and passed an advanced placement or international baccalaureate exam. It’s at 27.0, with Marion Center next at 15.6. Some schools did not provide data to their reporting agencies, which may have impacted their final ranking.
Top math proficiency honors go to Saltsburg, at 87 percent of the student body, followed by Marion Center at 84 percent. Marion Center also scored highest in English proficiency, at 90 percent.
