Bryan Reynolds played hero in Wednesday night’s game against Milwaukee as his solo home run in the ninth inning helped the Pirates to a 8-7 win over the Brew Crew.
Joe Block has the recap.
The Pirates go for the three-game sweep of Milwaukee this afternoon. RHP Zach Thompson (3-8, 5.09 ERA) is tabbed to start for Pittsburgh. RHP Brandon Woodruff (9-3, 3.55 ERA) will start for Milwaukee. Airtime is 12:10 p.m. on WCCS 101.1 FM and AM 1160. Because of this early start time, the noon news will start at 11:50 a.m.
Prior to yesterday’s game, the Pirates began their roster overhaul, as foreshadowed by General Manager Ben Cherington on Tuesday.
The Pirates designated 1B/DH Yoshi Tsutsugo for assignment and recalled INF Tucupita Marcano from Triple A Indianapolis. Tsutsugo’s designation comes after he experienced the second-worst season of his career after slashing .171/.249/.229 with 50 strikeouts.
His designation also leaves the 40-man roster at 39.
Marcano, on the other hand, started in left field last night for the Pirates and went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.
PIRATES INJURY NEWS
The Pirates also placed RHP David Bednar on the 15-day injured list with lower back inflammation. As a corresponding move, they recalled RHP Yohan Ramirez from Indianapolis.
During his weekly update, Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said RHP Blake Cederlind is “no threat of a second surgery” as he heals from a torn UCL. INF Nick Gonzales is expected to get into game-time action this week.
Last year’s first overall pick Henry Davis is playing soft toss and hitting in the cage.
Tomczyk also said there’s no real update on OF Jake Marisnick and Canaan Smith-Njigba and C Roberto Perez.
