Training intensified yesterday for the Steelers at Saint Vincent College as a heat wave gave head coach Mike Tomlin the opportunity to work on his team’s situational play.
Temperatures reached the low-90s with plenty of humidity in Latrobe for the first time in a week, giving players an uncomfortable afternoon for workouts. Tomlin, however, saw this as an opportunity to condition his team for when conditions are ideal during the regular and, if possible, the postseason.
Tomlin said that doing these workouts at the end of practice helps condition the players, especially the newcomers.
He adds that this ties in to some discussions he and others have had about how the team practices.
Tomlin also commented about the team’s use of bringing in referees during camp, saying it gives players an idea of what they’re looking for in games.
Defensive Player of the Year T.J. Watt said the team is matching the young offensive line with the veterans on defense, and it’s giving them a good learning experience.
In Steelers injury news, veterans Watt, Cam Heyward and Myles Jack did not practice; however Tomlin said that was “status quo”. Others remain day-to-day.
The Steelers yesterday hired former president of the Pittsburgh Penguins David Morehouse as a special assistant to team president Art Rooney II.
Rooney credited Morehouse’s success to why they hired him. He comes to the Steelers after serving as the Penguins’ president for 16 years.
Morehouse will focus primarily on community and league-related initiatives.

The NFL is appealing the sexual misconduct suspension of Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. He was suspended for six games by a retired federal judge and an appeal leaves the door open for a more lengthy suspension. Twenty-four massage therapists alleged sexual misconduct during appointments with Watson when he played for the Houston Texans. Watson, who received a 230-million guaranteed contract when he was traded to the Browns, has denied any wrongdoing to this point.
Tonight, the first preseason game takes place with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Jaguars will take on the Raiders.
