Governor Tom Wolf has filed a lawsuit against the Pennsylvania General Assembly for its attempt to ban abortion in the state.
The lawsuit filed on Thursday focuses on a package of proposed constitutional amendments that are being pursued by Republican lawmakers, including one that says the state constitution does not guarantee any rights related to abortion or the public funding of abortions. Wolf said that the proposed amendment would violate privacy protections. He claimed that bundling the abortion amendment with four other amendments that were passed by the General Assembly earlier this month during budget sessions went against the constitution. The other amendments dealt with voter ID, allowing candidates for Governor to choose their own running mates, allowing lawmakers to cancel regulations without facing a governor’s veto, and establishing election audits.
In a joint statement, Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman and Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward said that the lawsuit is “another reminder of Governor Wolf’s oppressive hand.” Wolf is requesting an expedited ruling as the Secretary of State is required by the state constitution to begin advertising the proposed amendment on August 2nd.
