The state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has proposed new rules to govern the use of e-bikes at its 121 state parks.
The new regulations reflect the popularity of the bikes, which have electric motors to help propel riders. The concern is if manufacturers are making faster, more powerful bikes and whether that imperils hikers and traditional bike riders.
Under the proposed rules, e-bikes would only be permitted if they:
- Weigh no more than 100 pounds
- Do not exceed 20 miles-per-hour using the motor
- Have motors that do not exceed 750 watts
- Have fully functional, operable pedals
State forest roads and trails that are not open to biking would also prohibit e-bikes.
DCNR would like to know how you feel about the proposed rules. It is asking that you comment at RA-NR_PolicyOffice@pa.gov. The deadline for public comment is August 31st.
