There have been a number of scam alerts in recent weeks, including one last week by Indiana Borough Police, but the latest ones reported have been with some state-based agencies.
One was from the PA Department of Revenue, and it involves a new scam in which fraudsters are sending phony letters to business owners to try and trick them into turning over their accounting records. The letters use the Department of Revenue’s name and logo, and advise the recipients that they are under investigation for failure to pay state taxes. Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell says they are working to help people identify scams and take appropriate steps to protect themselves.
The other recent scam was reported by the Public Utility Commission in the wake of the cost of electricity going up. The PUC says consumers should be alert for energy marketing scams involving robo-calls from unidentified sources, and calls from telemarketers who don’t identify themselves or make false claims that they are affiliated with the PUC or local electric utility.
