The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, in 11 innings in the Bucs’ home opener at PNC Park Monday afternoon.
Chris Archer pitched five strong innings in his first start this season for Pittsburgh, giving up just two hits and no runs. But the bullpen blew a four-run lead, giving up three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth and ninth innings. Nick Kingham, the eighth reliever for Pittsburgh, gave up the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the 11th.
Colin Moran led Pittsburgh with two hits and three RBIs. He hit a home run in the eighth inning.
The Pirates fell to 1-2. They are off Tuesday and play St. Louis again on Wednesday, airtime 6:40 p.m. on WCCS AM 1160 and 101.1 FM.
