The Pirates dropped the series opener to Colorado Friday night as the Rockies plated 13 runs on 17 hits to beat the Bucs, 13-2.
Joe Block has the recap.
Game two is tonight at Coors Field. RHP Mitch Keller (3-6, 4.88 ERA) will start for the Pirates. RHP Jose Urena (0-1, 2.66 ERA) will start for Colorado. Airtime is 2:45 on WCCS.
The Pirates shuffled their roster ahead of yesterday’s series opener, recalling OF Cal Mitchell from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioning OF Jack Suwinski. The 23-year-old leads all rookies with 13 home runs, but fell into a slump at the plate as he went hitless in his last 28 at-bats before being optioned.
In addition, the Pirates activated C Tyler Heineman from the Family Medical Emergency List and optioned C Michael Perez to Indianapolis. LHP Cam Alldred was also added to the taxi squad.
MLB DRAFT
The Pirates will have the fourth overall pick in Sunday’s MLB Draft, and experts say that the Bucs will consider adding a high school infielder with that pick.
MLB insider Jonathan Mayo has the Pirates taking second baseman Termarr Johnson out of Mays High School in Georgia at No. 4. He says Johnson yields the opportunity for the team to spread their bonus pool, similar to what they did last year when they shocked fans by taking C Henry Davis first overall.
The Athletic’s Keith Law says Johnson is the “best pure hit tool in the draft class,” saying he shows outstanding hand-eye coordination and great bat speed.
Other mock drafts has the Pirates taking third baseman Cam Collier out of Chipola Junior College and SS Brooks Lee out of Cal Poly.
The Pirates will also have the 36th overall pick in the supplemental first round and experts link them to RHP Jacob Miller out of Liberty Union High School in Ohio.
Druw Jones, son of former Atlanta Braves star Andruw Jones, is projected to go No. 1 overall to the Baltimore Orioles.
The Draft starts tomorrow at 7 p.m.
