“Libraries transform lives.”
According to library Director, Kate Geiger, “The library is a place where literacy blossoms – where children learn social skills, where teens have a safe place for educational and pleasure reading and interaction, where adults find fellowship, and where the unemployed can find job hunting resources.”
In May of 1907, Indiana’s local newspapers announced the “New Reading Room Opens.” The New Century Club’s vision for a public reading space was forward thinking. Thanks to an idea that was ahead of its time 110 years ago, Indiana can enjoy a full service library. From its inception, the Reading Room was to be a place not just for books and magazines, but also a place for social gathering, a place for the weary to read and rest, and a safe space to benefit the community as a whole. As the newspaper states, “A special effort is being made to make the opening an auspicious one, and it is hoped that the public will turn out in large numbers to see what a complete and cozy place has been provided.” Over a century later, this same space continues to provide a refuge for reading and thoughtfulness to the Indiana community.
The New Century Club’s optimistic outlook continues to be a foundation for the spirit of the Indiana Free Library. The Library continues to be a place for everyone. On behalf of the community, we thank The New Century Club for making this possible.
