The Pirates made a brief stop for a doubleheader in Cincinnati yesterday before moving on to Milwaukee to start a weekend series there.
Joe Block recaps yesterday’s action.
After the first game, the Pirates added another bullpen arm, recalling left-hander Eric Stout from Indianapolis and optioning Game One starter Roansy Contreras to Indy, although Contreras will remain with the Bucs until his next scheduled start next week.
The Pirates are in Milwaukee tonight to open a three game series. JT Brubaker [2-7, 4.28 ERA] pitches against the Brewers’ Aaron Ashby [1-6, 4.60 ERA]. it’s a 7:45 airtime on WCCS.
The Pirates yesterday announced that they will induct their inaugural “Pirates Hall of Fame” class before a September 3rd game against the Toronto Blue Jays. They did not indicate who will be in the class, but owner Bob Nutting said it could include players from the Negro Leagues’ Pittsburgh Crawfords and Homestead Grays. The names of the inductees will be revealed early next month.
While they will celebrate Pittsburgh baseball royalty on September 3rd, a couple of future Pirates have been selected to play in the All-Star Futures Game, which will be played July 16th at Dodger Stadium. Altoona catcher Henry Davis and Indianapolis right-hander Mike Burrows were named to the team yesterday. Both of them got off to red-hot starts this season, Davis with Greensboro before being hurt playing for Altoona, and Burrows with Altoona before being promoted to Indianapolis.
On the day they got the news, Burrows had a rough game against Iowa, giving up six runs in four innings and taking the loss, with his ERA rising to 7.31. Davis did not play for the Curve in a 3-2 win over Akron. The Curve’s Jared Triolo was 3-for-5 and stole a base, his 16th of the season.
Altoona will start righty Aaron Shortridge in the first game of a doubleheader tonight. The starter for the second game has not been named.
