Five different Penguins scored goals and backup goalie Casey DeSmith made 26 saves as the Pens beat Buffalo, 5-0 last night. The 5-0 win was DeSmith’s second shutout of the year. Phil Kessel, Patric Hornqvist and Jake Guentzel all scored on the power play for Pittsburgh, which also got goals from Nick Bjugstad and Brian Dumoulin. The Penguins have won three in a row and six of their last seven. They’ll return home to take on the Blues Saturday afternoon.
With 87 points, the Penguins kept pace with the Capitals and Islanders, who both won last night. Washington leads the Metropolitan Division with 91 points, followed by the Islanders with 89. Pittsburgh added space between them and idle Carolina, who holds the first wild card position. The Pens lead the Hurricanes by four points.
