Governor Tom Wolf has announced that today is Drug Take Back day where people can dispose of unused prescription drugs safely.
In a media release, Jennifer Smith, the acting secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, said that the Drug Takeback day is a good way to get drugs that could be abused out of circulation. Many of the prescription drugs that are abused are taken from medicine cabinets in someone’s home, and because many of them are no longer being used, the people who were prescribed the drugs may not know about the drug abuse until it’s too late.
In Indiana County, there are three prescription drop-box locations: At the Indiana Borough Police Department, at the IUP Police Department, and at the Blairsville Police Department. State Police will also hold drug take back activities today at St. Andrews Village in Indiana County and at Keystone Pharmacy in Westmoreland County from 10-2 today. All prescription drugs and creams will be accepted in their original packaging, and there’s no need to separate the drugs. Needles and Syringes will not be accepted for safety reasons.
Also, Diamond Drug on Philadelphia Street is holding a drug Take Back event during their normal business hours.
