The IUP women’s and men’s basketball teams swept the PSAC basketball championships Sunday afternoon, then received their Atlantic Regional seedings for the upcoming tournaments.
The IUP women’s basketball team beat Kutztown, 72-57, at Kutztown. IUP overcame a 22-9 deficit after one quarter. Carolyn Appleby led the way with a 26-point performance. Lauren Wolosik and Natalie Myers scored 12 points each and Brittany Robinson added 11. Myers hit a 3-pointer two minutes into the third quarter to give IUP a 35-32 lead, and the Crimson Hawks kept the advantage from there.
The women won their sixth championship. IUP, a NO. 3 seed, will go against No. 6 seed Bowie State in Glenville, West Virginia starting Friday. Glenville State, the No. 1 seed, will take on No. 8 West Liberty. In other match-ups: No. 4 California vs. No . 5 Charleston and No. 2 Virginia Union vs. No. 7 Edinboro.
The IUP men defeated West Chester, 56-49, for the PSAC championship at the KCAC. The men won their 10th title, earning an automatic berth and to play host to the Atlantic Region Tournament at the KCAC, beginning Saturday. IUP, the number one seed, will again play West Chester, the No. 8 seed .
In the other match-ups: No. 2 West Liberty vs. No. 7 East Stroudsburg, No. 4 Mercyhurst vs. No. 5 Fairmont State and No. 3 Virginia State vs. No. 6 Notre Dame (Ohio ) .
