The Pirates snapped their five-game losing streak on Wednesday after a three-home run game by outfielder Bryan Reynolds and a very unusual ruling swayed the game’s momentum in favor of the Bucs. They beat the Nationals, 8-7.
Joe Block has a full recap.
Manager Derek Shelton was happy that his team won, but he said they still need to play better.
While he was enjoyed his three-homer day, Reynolds was just happy his team got the win.
Reliever Tyler Beede, who the Pirates claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants on May 12, earned his second hold of the season after pitching two innings on Thursday. He said he loves coming in during high-leverage situations.
The unusual ruling came during the fifth inning when Ke’Bryan Hayes lined into a double play that should’ve ended the inning. Jack Suwinski and Hoy Park, who were on base when the play happened, advanced without tagging up. Park was tagged out at third, but the umpires allowed Suwinski to score. Washington appealed the call, but Shelton appealed THAT call, saying that teams who leave the field of play cannot appeal a call.
This is also known as the “Fourth Out” rule.
After a rules check, Suwinski’s run counted and the inning subsequently ended from the double play. The last time this type of play happened was back in 2009 when the Los Angeles Dodgers scored a run off the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Dodgers ended up winning that game, 3-1.
The Pirates return to PNC Park tonight as they open a four-game weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers. RHP J.T. Brubaker (1-7, 4.14 ERA) will start for the Pirates, while RHP Adrian Houser (4-8, 4.50 ERA) will start for Milwaukee. Airtime is 6:40 p.m. on WCCS.
