Penguins president of hockey operations Brian Burke provided an update regarding the ongoing negotiations with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang.
Burke said on “The Jeff Marek Show” on Tuesday that the team has made “determined efforts” to meet and sign Letang, and he adds they have had “direct discussions” with Malkin’s agent, but they are less determined to sign him since they only have so much money to work with and they have to put this jigsaw puzzle together.
Malkin, 35, is coming off an eight-year deal worth $76 million that he signed in 2013, while Letang is also coming off an eight-year deal signed back in 2013. That was worth $58 million.
Burke reiterated that the Penguins want both players back and that the future should be clear soon.
NHL
The Los Angeles Kings are bringing in a playmaking forward. The Kings acquired left winger Kevin Fiala from the Minnesota Wild in a trade that sent blue-line prospect Brock Faber and the 19th overall pick in this year’s NHL draft to St. Paul. ESPN reports that Fiala is expected to sign a seven-year extension with Los Angeles. The 25-year-old is coming off the best season of his career, scoring 33 goals and tallying 52 assists in 82 games.
