On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Senate passed three bills concerning sexual content in school material, classroom instruction on sexual identity and orientation, and transgender athletes in women’s sports.
One of the bills is Senate Bill 1278, which passed 29-21. It would prohibit classroom instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation for pre-K to fifth grade students, similar to controversial legislation that was passed in Florida. The second bill, SB 1277, would amend the public school code of 1949 to require schools to identify sexually explicit material in books and curriculum and to notify parents if the content is included in their children’s school work. Parents would also be allowed to have their children opt-out of the material.
The third bill, Senate Bill 1191, would prohibit transgender athletes from taking part in women’s sports at the high school and college levels.
Senator Joe Pittman voted in favor of all three bills. Governor Tom Wolf said that if the bills reach his desk, he will veto them.
